“Our team of girls this season have had their challenges. Most of the girls have never played together so suffice to say that it has been quite the learning experience.
This past weekend, the Cornwall Typhoons Bantam competed in the Oshawa Fall Classic. They played a total of six games in just over 48 hours kicking things off on Friday vs. the Aurora Panthers. It was a good back and forth game resulting in a 3-0 victory for the Typhoons. We then went on to face the SCFHA Brock Jr. Badgers later that day. The badgers came out flying but in the end it was our Typhoons that swept them away with a decisive 4-1 win. The following morning the girls seemed ready to take it one step closer to the finals by facing the Scarborough Sharks. The sharks were looking to devour the Typhoons but we weathered the storm by ending the battle in a 1-1 tie. Later that day, the Typhoons were looking for redemption when facing the Bancroft Jets. The Typhoons grounded the Jets before takeoff with a quick first goal. The pressure continued throughout three periods and ended in a 5-1 win! Off to the Semi-Finals!
The Semi-Finals were to be the next step in our final push for Gold. At this point the girls were riding the winds of the storm and ready for their next battle. They faced Kitchener in the pursuit of victory to move on to the Gold medal game later that day.
It was a back and forth game until the Typhoons buried their first goal. From that point, they continued their aggressive play and secured the go ahead goal. The game ended in a 2-0 victory.
We then faced Timmons for the Gold medal. Timmons had a solid tournament and were undefeated with no goals against. We wanted to put them to the test. The Typhoons were relentless and left everything on the ice for all three periods. The Typhoons buried the first puck giving Timmons their first goal against in the tournament. Shortly after, Timmons tied the game and both teams were hungry for the win. In the end it was a missed “too many men on the ice and a off-side call” all in the same play by the Timmons team that resulted in a second goal in the final few minutes or regulation time resulting in the game winner.
MVP of the tournament was awarded to Ria Amo of the Cornwall Typhoons for her contribution, hard work and leadership. Congratulations! The Typhoons Bantam B Girls hockey team came on with their heads’ held high. They walked away with the silver medal but more over, they ended the Oshawa Fall Classic Tournament knowing that they have the ability and talent to take it all the way this season. Confidence is half the battle.”
