Being a goalie comes with some baggage, literally and figuratively. Goalies have bigger and heavier bags to carry thanks to their oversized equipment. Being a goalie can be stressful as you are the last and only one back. Deep down, goalies are everyone’s favourite player. You are the one everyone depends on and without you, the team would be nothing.
Matter of fact goalies should get most of the glory. When a goalie makes a BIG save you are stealing the glory from the other team. Making that big save essentially gives you the power to change the momentum of the game. Next thing you know your team has some jump in their step and the puck is in the back of the other team’s net, all because of you.
To the team you are their prized possession. When you are in net, nobody messes with you or they will get it from all five of your teammates on the ice. Your team works their best to protect you. Nothing makes one of your teammates angrier than when someone gives you an extra slash after the whistle or snows you for no reason.
While your teammates are on the bench only getting on the ice every second, third, or fourth shift, you are out there the entire time. There is no lack of minutes being the starting goaltender. Shifts aren’t goalies style, they never have to get off the ice. Recreational teams are always looking for goalies. Keep your phone on loud because an hour before prime game time your phone will be ringing off the hook when teams are looking for goalies. Those games are the best too because there is no pressure for you to do well, they are just happy to have someone between the pipes for them. Also, when it comes to hockey camps, coaches are always looking for goalies to shoot on for their drills. This means free ice time and more shots for you to face.
Goalies also look cool. Having different gear than your teammates sets you a part. You are essentially the odd one out however, that just means you stand out and people will notice you more. What hockey player didn’t want to be a goalie when they were first trying out the sport? There is a reason everyone once wanted to try your position. Goalies are the best and teams would be nothing without you. So goalies make that pressure POWER!
