What Coaches Look For During Tryouts

As hockey tryouts approach, youth players across the country are gearing up to show their best skills. Now, every hockey coach is different in what kind of players they are looking for to make their team. However, there are the controllable and the uncontrollable and there is no doubt that every coach looks for these controllable aspects of the game:

  • Attitude – Every coach is watching to see what kind of attitude you have. Are you positive and get right back up when you fall or do you quit after you made a mistake?
  • Effort – Coaches are always watching your effort. They are looking to see if you are constantly giving your 100% because everybody knows, “Hard work beats talent when talent isn’t not working hard.”
  • Body language – This ties in with your attitude. Your body language says it all so make sure you hold yourself in a positive demeanor.
  • Focus – Coaches look to see if you are focused on the ice. They want to see that you payed attention to instruction and are doing the drill correctly.
  • Preparedness – Always make sure you come to the rink prepared. Double check your hockey bag to ensure you have everything. This will keep you focused for tryouts and prove to the coach you are responsible and ready to play.
  • Have fun – Lastly make sure you are having fun out there. Coaches want players who enjoy the game and will make the locker a more enjoyable place.
